Benedict Wong’s Marvel-ous Red Carpet Run
It started with a barefoot shoe.
Rewind to last August, during the new dawn of Hollywood-is-back red carpet dressing, to the incredibly well-dressed premiere of what was then the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. Benedict Wong—who portrays the character Wong, friend of and fellow sorcerer to Doctor Strange, in various Marvel franchises—rolled up in the most easy-breezy carpet look we’d seen this side of the pandemic: loose-fit olive velvet slacks, tonal forest green jacket, blue tropical-flora shirt, and navy Vivobarefoot trail shoes. It was perfectly weird, thoughtful (a little matching pocket square!), and, ultimately, cool.
It’s a sartorial run Wong’s continued ever since, though he’s upped the polish a bit in the wake of Marvel’s never-ending run. On Monday, the actor attended the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Los Angeles premiere in a custom Grayscale three-piece suit that paired a navy slub silk jacket with black slacks and a simple bow tie. A few weeks earlier in London, he wore a checked Walker Slater three-piece he accessorized with polka-dot pocket square and a breezily open shirt collar—a look that turned out to be a natural successor to the sandy tweed suit and green polka-dot tie he wore to the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere in December. With a solid mise en place of go-to outfit ingredients (the man loves a three-piece suit, a standout shoe, and a pocket square), Wong is establishing himself as a straight-up style hero.
Could it be that after all this time, dressing up can still be fun, chill, even a bit…Strange? You probably won’t have to wait too long for the next Marvel movie premiere to find out.
