Shawn Mendes Channels Bruce Springsteen While Showing Off His Abs

In a move which is bound to delight younger pop fans and possibly infuriate older generations, musician Shawn Mendes has just recorded a cover of the Bruce Springsteen anthem ‘Dancing in the Dark’ as part of the new Classics Reborn sustainable clothing campaign with Tommy Hilfiger.

“Feeling very proud to work together & reimagine Tommy’s classic styles more sustainably,” the singer, who wore the famous designer on the red carpet at this month’s Met Gala, wrote on Instagram.

The new music video shows Mendes paying homage both to the musical and fashion stylings of The Boss, complete with a bandana in the back pocket of his blue jeans. At several points he can also be seen flaunting his lean, ripped physique while getting in and out of different Hilfiger polo shirts and running shirtless. His sculpted abs take center stage at the end of the video, where he falls backwards, shirt open, into a field.

The old adage might tell us that abs are made in the kitchen, but for Mendes that isn’t necessarily the case; he once told Rolling Stone that he prefers to eat what he wants and then make up for it in the gym. “I’m not the best to talk about when it comes to diet,” he said. “If there’s fries in front of me, I’m definitely not gonna say no… I eat tons of carbs. I just work out a lot, dude. I go to the gym every morning, and I’m obsessed with fitness and just staying active.”

But that obsession wasn’t always healthy. Following his Calvin Klein underwear campaign in 2019, Mendes spoke about his struggles with body image, saying that he would quite literally lose sleep over the “expectation to be hot” and that posing in his underwear for the ad exacerbated the pressure he felt to maintain his physique. “Some days I would have three hours of sleep [because] I’d get up two hours early just to be able to work out,” he said in a 2020 interview.

Since then, Mendes, now 23, has developed a more balanced approach to health and fitness, which also includes mindful practices like journaling and meditation, as well as prioritizing rest. “Taking that extra few hours of sleep, instead of waking up to pump iron, is a better choice sometimes,” he said.
