Laura Linney Hasn’t Seen the Ending of Ozark

If I was Wendy Byrde right about now—a prospect that feels, somehow, both delicious and horrifying to me—I’d be taking an obnoxious glug of red wine.

Want to know why? And/or partake yourself? A great bit of Ozark gossip just made its way to Esquire’s Ozark desk. This Wednesday morning, Vulture published a great Q&A with Laura Linney, the actress behind the Byrde family’s agent of chaos. In the interview, the outlet covers quite some ground with the Emmy-nominated actress, including her theater background, the idea of playing Aunt May in a Spider-Man flick, and The Truman Show. Eventually, of course, the conversation makes its way to her standout turn in Ozark, which dropped its finale in late April. Want to know what Linney thinks of how Ozark ending? Too bad. You should read the full back-and-forth:

What did you think of the ending?

I haven’t seen it. I don’t know what they chose. I’m very bad at watching myself, and I’m particularly bad at watching things that I really loved doing because it’s going to change the minute I see it. I really can’t comment on it.

Can I ask what the other endings were?
No. I’m not going to do that.

Maybe this is not a fruitful conversation, so we can move on …
No, it’s fine. This is just what my experience in doing it is. What its overall result is or how it affects other people, I don’t have an agenda about that. I don’t think about results — like, what it all means, what it all does. I don’t know. I think about the little, tiny moments leading up to that and then it’s going to be whatever it is, and I don’t have anything to do with that. That’s not my job.

Damn. Two things: One, it’s surprising that Laura Linney has Adam Driver’s I-can’t-watch-myself-in-anything syndrome. Two, there were other endings filmed for Ozark? You could really go wild with speculation on that one. Chris Mundy didn’t mince words when he confirmed that Jonah shot Mel Sattem in the last seconds of the series. But was there a version filmed where we see what happens after the gunshot? Or did something else happen entirely? We need answers, Ozark.
