How to Wear Western Style Clothing for Women of All Ages
The idea to style western style clothing for women was the style prompt for our Magnificent 8 group since there has been a resurgence of this look.

Quote of the day: “Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us.” Stephen Covey
I think it’s safe to say that at this stage of the game, we realize that just because a certain style is trending doesn’t mean we have to be part of it.
Yet the other side of that coin is the fact that having variety and trying the current clothing can be a way to have fun with our style.
Even though the three of us live in the Southwest which could be considered the epicenter of finding western style clothing for women, we don’t usually dress in this overall style.
Except that I have been loving my white cowboy boots. And Lesley was the first of us to purchase a rancher’s style hat (which she didn’t even wear today). Even Charlotte has a plethora of turquoise earrings that she didn’t even wear for this look.
What is the funniest thing about these examples is how both my mom and Lesley ended up looking like twins. Or as we always say, “great minds think alike”.
Yet I think there are many ways to incorporate just ONE piece of western style clothing with other styles. In fact, that was my goal with my outfit but I failed because I got too caught up with the different varieties of western things I wanted to showcase. (It’s the problem of having too much stuff, haha)
Insider tip: The idea of mixing up different styles of clothes is called dichotomy or yin/yang. One great example is pairing a ruffle dress with a biker jacket. The feminine style with an edgy vibe. This can be done with ANY style to make it seem fresh and less costumey.

Midi Denim Skirt and a Fringe Purse
My mom’s outfit for our western style clothing for women prompt started with the fringe purse. She recently picked this up while thrifting, and I swear it doesn’t look like it’s ever been used.
She decided to wear a midi-length denim skirt and then found a blue plaid top to go with it.
Related post: This skirt is styled in a non-western style look.
Insider tip: Denim skirts are ideal for wearing in the winter since tights don’t stick to the material.
Proportions with a Midi-Length Skirt
I love how my mom created a 1/3 to 2/3 proportion with her longer denim skirt by tying up her blouse.
Insider tip: Use a hair elastic (found on Amazon) for this type of bulkier material. It’s great to find packages of multi-colored elastics so the color is camouflaged depending on what you are wearing.
Western Style Accessories
The fringe purse is definitely a great western-style detail for this look.
You might think that cowboy boots are essential for western-style clothing for women, but as you can see by Charlotte’s look (and Lesley’s too), you could incorporate sneakers for a fabulous outfit.
This pair of yellow sneakers are from Jambu, called the “Erin“. These are available this season but my mom has had them since this spring (seen in this article).
I think it’s whimsical to add a totally different color to your look with your footwear.
Insider discount: You can get 20% off Jambu footwear until Oct. 26 with code Style20.
Lesley’s Western Style Clothing for Women
Who knew that both Lesley and my mom would choose basically the same pieces for this idea of western style clothing for women? It was NOT pre-planned, but then again, maybe that means many of us have some of the same items in our closets.
The differences between Lesley and Charlotte:
1-Lesley wore a shorter skirt that comes right above her knees. FYI, it’s actually a skort.
2-She also used her button-up blouse as a jacket over another top.
3-Both wore sneakers but Lesley wore blue to match the denim.
Lesley’s Proportions with a Shorter Denim Skirt
I think Lesley’s outfit is a fabulous example of how you don’t always need to worry about proportions. Sure, if you read articles about proportion, they concentrate on having either the top or bottom be 1/3 the overall look and the other be 2/3.
For this example, the plaid top and jean skirt are really a half-and-half proportion.
Yet I don’t think you would look at this outfit and think there is anything wrong with it. Sometimes it’s good to be a rebel and break the rules!
Insider tip: I think proportions are a good thing to consider when something about your outfit doesn’t seem “right”. It’s not a factor that you need to worry about in each and every look.
The main aspect of a look that people notice is color.

Lesley’s Accessories & Footwear
Lesley did add a turquoise ring for some Western inspiration. You might think of turquoise jewelry as more of an American Indian detail, but that’s part of the Wild West, right? In fact, I did the same thing with my earrings.
We were exploring the Arizona State Fair for this outing, which is why comfortable shoes were a necessity. Lesley opted for a pair of navy Walking Cradles called the “Orleans”. Lesley is a huge fan of navy footwear and this color is a new option for the Orleans.
I was able to be part of the FB Live event when they introduced this new color, and let me tell you how soft the leather is.
BTW, I have this style of “Orlean” in 6 different prints because they are that comfortable.

But you’re going to laugh when Lesley told me this: “I used to be a Cowboy Cutie when I was a kid. Now that I’m grown up and not really a country western fan I consider myself a Dance Hall Dolly.”
Shorts and Cowboy Boots
I never realized I would be so over the moon about white cowboy boots. But I stalked a couple of different ones before buying this pair from Target. The most amazing part is there is memory foam in the sole and therefore they are extremely comfortable and a great deal.

Just like Lesley and my mom, I figured that denim was the obvious choice for western style clothing for women. But I wanted longer shorts than any I had in my closet.
So what’s a girl to do?? Cut off a pair of jeans that she doesn’t wear often.
Insider tip: I didn’t want them super tight at the cuff, so I also cut some of the threads holding the seams together on the outside hem. If you’re worried it will keep splitting, then sew a horizontal seam where you want it to stop. No one will ever see it.
Make Your Own Belt Bag
Knowing we would be walking around for the day, I wanted a hands-free experience. However, when I put this purse on as a crossbody, it interfered with my necklace. And I didn’t want to get rid of the necklace.
Therefore I got creative with the straps on my purse and created a belt bag. You can see the process in this short video. And I ended up putting the strap under my blouse so you didn’t see it.
Don’t ask me how I come up with these things, LOL! I just keep playing until I can make it work.
Western and Southwestern may be two different kinds of styles in your way of thinking. But I decided to incorporate it all together for my look.
Just like Lesley showcased with her turquoise jewelry, I wore these wooden earrings bought at the American Indian reservation recently.
And then this southwest pattern purse was a find at the Superstition Mountain museum (yes, I shop the gift shops. It’s in my DNA since that’s where my mom finds her best treasures). This brand of handbag can even be found on Amazon. They are such a great combination of different textures and materials to make for a super cool purse.
What I really love is how many use upcycled material. Really, you should check them out!
The other item that I have fallen in love with is this rancher-style hat. Mine is from Amazon and they even have it in 20 other colors and styles.
