Chances are, your shoe of choice for any moves that need to be made on the fly—hitting the corner store, knocking out last-minute errands, pulling up to an impromptu hang—is some sort of slide. Worn solo in the summer (or with scuzzy camp socks when the weather is less accommodating), it’s a no-frills silhouette that demands minimal effort from its wearer. Simply slip one on and continue with your day.
For style-minded Angelenos of a certain disposition (think Seth Rogen or Jonah Hill), the slide du jour is Fear of God’s California silhouette, a lightweight, foam-like model that’s cropped up on red carpets and press junkets with a surprising frequency. So for his latest collaboration, FOG kahuna Jerry Lorenzo went straight to the cushy-footbed source, teaming up with the German slip-on whizzes at Birkenstock on a luxe sandal destined to be another hit.
On the surface, the silhouette is pretty understated, but the exaggerated heel cup, wide strap, and thick rubber soles make just enough of a statement to distinguish it from the rest of Birkenstock’s red-hot assortment. Which is exactly the point. Buying anything—even a pair of knock-around slides—just for the sake of it is never sound policy, a notion Lorenzo is particularly attuned to. His latest collection, he told GQ last year, was informed by his desire to craft perfect versions of the pieces missing from his wardrobe, without having to worry about buying it all again the next season. The search for perfect slides may not be as involved, but the one-and-done approach holds true just the same.
Another move you should make on the fly? Adding these to your cart. If prior history is any indication, they won’t stick around long.
You wake up in the middle of the night and the “pee or not to pee” question comes up.…
