KNOWING THE VALUE OF YOUR WORTH

The other day, my daughter wanted to take some photos for a work anniversary celebration. She had a cake, and she had bought a plastic cake stand to use in her photos. I told her that I had something much more beautiful that we could use, and I pulled out this gorgeous cake stand for her.

This cake stand is old, and it was her great-great-grandmother’s. I told her the history of the cake stand as I washed off the years of not being in use. I don’t bake a lot of cakes, and even when I do, I don’t use my stand since I want to make sure that it doesn’t get broken.

As I was washing the stand, I noticed that it had one flaw. There was a chip on the lip of the cake stand that I hadn’t noticed before. It didn’t take away from the value of the stand for me, because I could see the hundreds of cakes that have been displayed on this stand. I know the love and effort that my family has poured into making treats for their families. I look at this stand, and I see an invaluable heirloom. But, if you picked up this stand, you might see a flaw, a chip, and a worthless piece of glass.

I read an article the other day about a grandfather, a watch, and his grandson. The grandfather told the grandson that the watch had belonged to his great-great-grandfather. Sound familiar? He told his grandson to take the watch to see how much the watch was worth. The grandson took the watch to the watchmaker and came back to tell his grandfather that he was offered 5.00 for the watch. Then he took the watch down to the coffee shop and came back and said that once again, he had been offered 5.00 for the watch. The grandfather told the boy to take the watch down to the museum and see what they thought about its value. The grandson came back this time and said that they offered him $1,000,000 for the watch. The lesson behind the story was to show you that you need to find those who value you and know your worth.

Matthew 6:26

²⁶ Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Matthew 10:29-31

²⁹ Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. ³⁰ And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. ³¹ So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

It can be easy to focus on our flaws and then feel like we are unworthy of God’s love and forgiveness. We may think that we have to be perfect in order to be worthy of God’s acceptance and approval. But the truth is that we are all flawed and imperfect, and God loves us anyway.

Romans 3:23

²³ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

In fact, it is precisely because of our flaws that we need God’s love and forgiveness. None of us are perfect, and we all make mistakes. But the good news is that God’s love and grace are available to us regardless of our flaws and imperfections.

The apostle Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament, knew this truth well. He described himself as the chief of sinners and acknowledged his own flaws and weaknesses. Paul also recognized that his worth and strength came not from his own abilities or achievements, but from the power of Christ working in him.

Philippians 4:13

¹³ I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

We too can find worth and strength in Christ, even in the midst of our flaws and weaknesses. When we acknowledge our need for Him and turn to Him for help, we can experience the transforming power of His love and grace. As we grow in our relationship with Him, we will begin to see ourselves the way He sees us – as beloved children, worthy of His love and forgiveness.

So today, let us remember that our worth is not based on our own perfection, but on the perfect love and grace of God. Let us turn to Him in our flaws and weaknesses, and allow Him to work in us and through us for His glory.

Our value is measured by those that love us, and no one loves us more than our creator. You are priceless in the Lord’s eyes. Never forget how much you cost Him. He gave His only son for you.
