How to make your outfits feel instantly more summery

7 total views

One of my favorite ways to lighten up an outfit is to swap out heavy leather accessories for more seasonal materials. I’m a big fan of raffia shoes and bags to help transition my wardrobe between seasons.

Raffia is a durable and sustainable material that comes from the leaves of the Raffia palm. (Not to be confused with straw, which is from the stalks of grain plants, like wheat or barley.) Raffia has a natural resin that makes it pliable, so it can be woven in intricate patterns. It’s lightweight and breathable, which makes it a great material for warm weather footwear.

I’ve been a fan of raffia shoes since I bought my first pair a few years ago. If sandals or open-toe shoes aren’t an option for you, the open weave of many styles of raffia shoes allows for air flow, while still providing coverage. I also like the texture and visual interest they add.

While some say they find raffia shoes can be scratchy, that’s never been my experience. And I find that raffia softens up with wear.

Lighten up your transitional season outfits with raffia shoes and bags

Raffia has been flagged as one of 2023’s trends, and I’m seeing more styles in this material than I have in several seasons.

A classic loafer style in raffia with a fun pattern on the vamp. These are well-reviewed, too!

A cool take on a classic ballet flat.

The black suede here dresses up these raffia mules.

Have an event coming up? This black raffia clutch would go nicely with those mules…just saying…😉

(Yes, both of the above mix warm and cool…colors. 🤷‍♀️)

These loafers are a bit more spendy, but look really well-made.

Not all raffia pieces are neutral/tan. Here’s a navy raffia flat with fun embroidery detail.

I love the shape of this raffia shoulder tote (also available in Natural).

Even sneakers are getting in on the raffia trend…

Here’s another raffia flat in cooler tones.

This shoulder bag has a bit of a 70’s macrame look. If your style is a bit more Bohemian, but you hate big unstructured bags, this one might be worth a look.

Do you wear raffia accessories?
